  • Personal file storage.
  • Saving inbox space.
  • Sharing a file with a student or coworker.

O365 Groups

  • Group email.
  • Group calendar.
  • File storage/OneNote.
  • Group IM/video.
  • Private or public.
  • User-created.
  • Self-managed.
  • HIPAA compliant.
  • Secure.

But -

  • Little central control.
  • Cannot "send as".
  • Default to public.

O365 Groups are good for:

  • Team and project collaboration.
  • Internal knowledge base.
  • Listserv substitute.

Shared Mailbox

  • "Send as" resource address.
  • Exchange calendar.
  • Message forwarding.
  • Mailbox rules.
  • Familiar interface.
  • Self-managed.
  • HIPAA compliant.
  • Secure.

But -

  • Just mailbox functionality.
  • No file storage.
  • Tricky access steps.

Shared Mailboxes are good for:

  • Need "send as" resource address.
  • Need full mailbox functionality like forwarding or rules.

SharePoint

  • Department, division or college document storage and collaboration.
  • NIU authenticated.
  • Files persist when a user leaves NIU.
  • Delegated admin.
  • HIPAA compliant.
  • Secure.

But -

  • Local admin upkeep.
  • Advanced features require developer skills.

SharePoint is good for:

  • Intranets/portals.
  • Announcements, dashboards, Wikis.
  • Document storage and sharing.

Cascade

  • Web design platform.
  • Little/no coding required.
  • Publishing workflow.
  • Quick content publishing.
  • Web design skills not required.

But -

  • Content not secure.
  • Complex user interface.

Cascade is good for:

  • Public facing web pages.
